STEP-BY-STEP: Halo Sketch

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Hello, this is the first step-by step I will be posting here. It's a very simple sketch from the game "Halo".

Since I'm not particularly familiar with the game, I went hunting for references on Google Images, finding many hi-res images to use.

Then it's time to decide the soldier's position. Normally this part works by trial-and-error, sketching and erasing until I find the ideal pose, but in this case I made various examples so that I could post them here.

I wanted something iconic but simple. So I ended up going through examples 1, which I thought came up too simple and 2, which I didn't use because I found it too cliche. Until I decided on number 3, for it is iconic without the cliche factor and simple but not too simple.

From there it was a matter of sketching up the details, based on the references. On this stage I'm not too worried about the weights of the lines or shades, I just want to make sure that all the elements are there.

And finally I complete the sketch, adding more line thickness to objects and parts that are closer and defining the shading. Normally my art has heavier shading, but I opted to make this sketch lighter to avoid hiding all the armor details.

FINALLY IT'S HERE!

After stringing my webdesigner along for a LONG time, finally the website is born (and I say "born", because it took me NINE MONTHS to move my ass and select the material I wanted to put online)!

Anyway, I am (for now) an aspiring comic artist trying to get by in Brazil... Maybe I should've listened to my mom and become a dentist... ;-P

But, back to the point, here you will be able to surf through my Portfolio, following the progress of my comic samples and previous work, or visiting my Sketchbook.

You can also take a look at my Biography, to better find out who the hell I am, or you can follow this Blog, where I will be posting the progress of work and Sketches as I produce them.

So, WELCOME and please comment, after all an artist only grows through compliments and, especially, criticism.

And I am sorry in advance if this website goes long periods without updates... I have a SERIOUS procrastination problem.

Cheers

Juliano de Sousa
